It's Been Crazy

I had a crazy busy whorl-wind of a weekend filled with lots of tears and lots of laughter. Caleb and I made the trip back up to northeast Missouri to not only to see me new nephew Lincoln, but also to go to my wonderful Grandma Nell's funeral. It was a long, but quick weekend that entailed lots of late nights. Caleb and I just got back and are trying to get things all back to normal. I am so very tired, but I wanted to let ya'll know where I've been. I am hoping that tomorrow I will be able to sit down and tell ya what all I've been up to as well as tell ya all about my wonderful Grandma.
Here's a pic of me and Grandma this past Christmas when I was back up there.

Until later
Lots of Love

Weeds and A Weasel

Last Sunday afternoon was a beautiful afternoon. Way too nice to be layin' around inside doin' nothing so Caleb and I headed out to do some stuff out in the yard. He hung up the swing, but that's a whole nother story for another post. After helpin' him with that I headed over to my irises to do some weedin' cause they were gettin' a little out of control.
Yes, I'm wearin' a tie-dye shirt,

and yes I have a lot of eye make-up still on from church,

don't judge me, that's just who I am.
So I gave the husband the camera and made him earn his supper, by takin' some pics of me.

As you can see in the background my onery little jack russell, Jasper (aka: onery little weasel today). He is a very curious dog and he likes to be in the middle of everything.
Even my Irises.
Yes, I'm yelling at my dog.

I do that a lot.

Oh, please don't judge me, you'd yell too if he was always gettin' into your garden and flowers....
....and not payin' a bit of attention. It's like I'm not even here.
But if I yell loud enough and long enough he will eventually go sulking out of my flowers, or garden, which ever he's in at the time.
Now it's back to pullin' weeds.
See here'd my large pile of weeds.

Sorry I don't have a pic of what the flowers look like now.

After all Caleb was runnin' the camera, wich means....

...I get a few pics with me out of focus and branches in my face, like this one. Oh well I still love him.

Later Tatters,
Jan

Does the Wind Blow in Kansas

So I do realize that I live in Kansas, but last Wednesday and Thursday it was crazy windy around here, with the wind blowin' 30mph most of the time and gusting up to 40mph. When you walk outside you are instantly covered in a layer of dirt, and your hair doesn't even come close to stayin' in place. I seriously don't know how all my Western Kansas friends do it out there. It is way too windy and there are far too little trees. For a 'tree hugger' like me that's not good.
Anyways because of this crazy wind last week, Caleb's folks woke up to find this out by their driveway. Calvin (Caleb's dad) noticed back last summer their huge old elm tree had a big 'ol crack goin' strait down the middle. My sister suggested wrap a big ol' log chain around it to try and hold it together, but by this point the crack had gotten so big that we thought it was a lost cause and thought it would be better to just move everything out from under the tree and not to park anything around it either. Just wait for a strong southern' wind to come blow it down and last Thursday night that's just what happened.
When the top went tumbling down it took a big ol' branch off on its way to the ground.
This branch probably had a 10-12 inch diameter.
The main part of the tree was hollowed out pretty good, so it's not really a surprise that the top fell off.
The force of a falling tree always amazes me. It can jam branches quiet a ways down into the ground.
Caleb was pretty sad about the loss of this tree, cause it was a favorite to climb in, and it use to be home to his old tree house...
...and a tree swing.
Just look at those big flat branches, they would have been so great climb all over as a child!
No one and nothing was hurt when it fell, but now we have one huge mess to clean up.

Fence Me In

With the beautiful warm weather we have ha this spring the grass in the pasture is growing like crazy and producing more than the cows could ever eat. After the hard winter we had this year our hay supply has been milked dry, and now that we have another group of cattle we are going to need even more hay for this next winter. So to help make sure we will have plenty of good thick hay to mow later this spring, we are gonna pull the cows off some of their pasture. To do this we needed to build a temporary fence to keep the cow off. How hard the fence is to build, depends on what type of fence you build. On this day we are just doing one strand of smooth electric wire fence, so it's nothing to hard, and since the ground was soo wet when we were building this fence, it makes driving the post even easier!
Ya start on one end with a brace post or something very solid to tie to.
Ya tie the two posts together to give stability to the fence when you go to tighten it.
After you have strung the wire out you must corner it off and tie it off.
In order to get it tighten the fence up you must use a fence stretcher and ratchet it to the tensions you need. If you bite your lip it makes this process a whole lot easier!
Ya gotta "jump" the current at the corners. If the wires share an insulator then this is no problem, but here we couldn't do that, so a simple wire works here. I was told by Caleb not to use this photo cause he used an ugly wire in this jump. But I don't listen very well...it's true, just ask my mother....anyways I didn't listen and used the picture anyways. Seriously ya'll don't care what the wire looks like.

Now that the wire is strung, it's time to drive some posts into the ground.
And there is no one more qualified to do this than my wonderful husband.

He makes this look fun and easy.

Ok, maybe not so fun.

Ok, maybe not so easy.

So he just makes this look like work.
After you get the post pounded into the ground, and the driver thrown back onto the truck...
....clip an insulator onto the post....
...secure the wire in place....

....load up and head on to the next stop.
After all that hard work ya might deserve a water break, just maybe, if you're lucky.

While on break I made Caleb take my picture.
Hold the button halfway down and focus...
...seriously I give up. Give me back my camera!
Finally a good picture, thank you very much!
I work too....I promise I do, but unless I make Caleb take my picture, ya'll don't get to see that.
He was havin' way too much fun...and it looks like he ate a smurf along the way. (by the way - Caleb has never seen a smurfs cartoon...how sad is that!)
With that being said, I'm shuttin' the gate and headin' home. Enough of this crazy work stuff!!
