DIY - Making a Mason Jar Tumbler Lid

So a while back I was on Etsy (another site that may just be evil, but I love it!) and on the home page they were spotlighting a store that was making these...

Mason Jar Tumblers...

I fell in LOVE with them then and there!!

Hers had plain lids, as do most of mine, but I had a fun lid and ring set that I though just looked soo cute!

So how to make these darling little drink holders, well they are even easier than the Soap Dispenser I showed you the other day.

So here we go...

Tools: Drill with a 7/16 drill bit and tin snips

Supplies: Pint or Quart Mason Jar, a Mason Jar lid and Ring, a Polycarbonate Drinking Straw, and a Rubber Grommet. (I will talk more about what that is in a little bit)

Start with screwing the lid on the jar and then drilling a hole through the top.

Once again make sure to have a hand holding the jar while you are doing this.

Also, I did this in an old ice cream bucket because it would catch all the little metal shavings that were made when you drilled through the lid.

See all those little shavings, you don't want them flying around your house if they don't have to.

Also if you have any little pieces still hanging on you will want to take your tin snips and clip it off.

Next you will need this little guy.

This took me a while to figure out what it was, when I saw it on the one for sale on Etsy.

Well this is a...

Grommet.

WHAT?!?!?!

It's something that is used in auto mechanics. That's all I know about them and that's probably all you care to know about them.

This is important if you are going to make this you need to make sure you get the right size, or it wont work for the straw to go through.

You will need a grommet with a 3/8 Bore Diameter (BD) or Inside Diameter (ID) (that's the middle where the straw will go through)  The straws have a diameter of 3/8 and fit perfectly in there once they have been installed.

Once you have those little guys, you will just take them and carefully push them in to place. Be careful with this, because you don't want to cut yourself on the hole...it's very sharp!

Now wash everything up and make sure all the shavings are out of the jar, then fill the jar with your favorite drink, screw the lid on, put the straw in and sit back and enjoy!

That's an order!! :)

This is my big iced coffee drinking jar, that is currently filled with sweet tea, but whatever.

FYI: if you use the quart jars for the glass, the y don't fit in cup holders in your car....grrrr!

So stay tuned, the beginning of next week I will be doing a give away with both of these DIY projects!

Have a wonderful weekend, I know I will. Little man and I are heading to MO to go and watch my oldest nephew graduate from high school (tear). I think this means I'm getting old! :)

  1. Wonderful idea. You could even use all those useless jars you can't can in with the plastic lids or complete metal lids.

  3. THANK YOU for posting this! I was just scouring my hardware store today looking for a part that might work only to leave without finding any grommets. SO happy I found your blog and tutorial so that I know exactly what to look for!

  4. I wish they made more of the taller fruit quart jars. You know the ones I'm talking about? They're taller and skinnier (still a wide mouth), and I can only ever find them at antique stores or garage sales. They are perfect for drinking out of, though, because they fit in the cupholders!Gotta make me some of these!

    1. They are called "Pint and a half" jars. They were rereleased last year, so you should be able to find some now if you haven't looked in awhile. Cheers!

  9. Do you have any suggestions or links you could share that would help me find the correct grommet? I would really like to have these as favors for my wedding but the only way I will be able to afford them is by making them my self..

  15. Hey guys, I found the grommets on eBay here:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/25-RUBBER-GROMMETS-3-8-BORE-DIAMETER-5-8-OUTSIDE-DIAM-/280623895716?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item41567cd4a4&vxp=mtr

mine are on their way! I'm going to try making these with the plastic lids like these ones here:

Thank you so much for this post Janet!

  16. I made these this morning as teacher presents. I got the grommets at my local ace hardware. Stainless straws are available at good kitchen stores and amazon.

Maybe putting the lids on top of a piece of wood and drilling into both would make the hole neater and not require the tin snips.

  17. I found that if use a piece of scrap 2x4 or any wood to drill into, you won't have those little snarls in the back of the lid. Just hang on to the lid when you drill! HA =) Love your blog!

  19. I actually bought one of these drinking jars last summer and wondered how to make them. Where do you find the straws? Yours looks like a reusable acrylic one. Thanks!

  20. Caution! Not all straws are 3/8" diameter. I bought all my supplies only to find that the reusable straws I found at the Dollar Tree are more like 1/4". Now to walk back up to Ace hardware to exchange these grommets for smaller ones!

  21. Are you sure the grommets are dishwasher/food safe? Just nervous that they might leach something out...although they probably won't come in contact with the drink...

  22. I found those grommets at Ace Hardware for .49 each. Also, the taller 24 oz straight sided Ball jars fit in my car cupholders. They are the jars that have a picture on the box with asparagus in them. I buy 9" BPA free polypropylene swirly straws on ebay from SerenityStraws. They come to about $1 each.

  23. My husband came up with a great idea. He places the lids flat side down on a piece of wood while he is drilling it and it really reduces the metal spurs that you have to trim off. If you time it just right and stop drilling when you get through the metal, there really aren't any spurs at all. Hope this helps!

  24. Used this tutorial today - thanks!! Target has 9 of the 1.5 pint jars (taller and skinnier that kind of fit in my cup holder) for $10!

  25. You can buy a ton of grommets at harbour freight for $10. I think the box of 200 came with 40 of the size I needed. Also, these instructions are by far the best out of all the DIY Mason Jar Tumbler instructions on the internet right now. From putting the lid on the jar to give you something to hold, to the bucket to catch the shavings. I just made 48 in under three hours thanks to you.
